We Are LTK: Celebrating 10 Years of Gary Roche-Bernard

By November 2, 2026No Comments

Some people know mortgage operations. Some know the technology behind them. Gary Roche-Bernard has spent his career connecting the two, with one question guiding his work: will this make life better for the lender?

On November 1, we celebrate Gary’s 10-year anniversary at Lender Toolkit. A decade of solving problems, building better tools, and making sure what looks good in development also works for the people moving loans forward.

From the lender’s side of the desk

When Gary joined LTK, we were a small, passionate team with a clear mission: make mortgage technology work better for lenders.

He brought more than 20 years of banking experience and years as an Encompass Administrator. He understood the daily friction, the workarounds, and the difference the right tool could make.

“I had spent years on the operations side of the business, so I knew firsthand how much the right tools could change someone’s day,” Gary says. “The chance to move closer to the technology, and to help build those tools myself, was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

What began with writing simple business rules grew into designing increasingly complex solutions. As LTK expanded, so did the challenges Gary helped tackle.

“Every year has brought something new to learn and something bigger to build, and that never gets old.”

The customer’s voice, from concept to release

As a Product Owner, Gary helps turn lender needs into clear requirements our engineering team can build. He prioritizes work, answers questions, reviews what gets developed, and stays involved throughout the process.

The job comes with roadmaps and backlogs. The purpose is simpler.

“My job is to make sure that every feature we build starts with a real lender need and ends with a real lender benefit.”

That means continually asking whether a feature will make customers more productive. If the answer is unclear, the work keeps evolving.

It also means looking beyond individual tools. Gary helps identify how their capabilities can connect, bringing LTK closer to a seamless, end-to-end mortgage workflow. A useful tool solves a problem. Connected tools can remove the steps that created the problem in the first place.

One project he is especially proud of is the ongoing work to convert LTK’s legacy tools and utilities into modern API functions. Tools that once operated independently are becoming building blocks for connected automation, helping lenders reduce manual work, limit errors, and move loans forward faster.

“It’s foundational work, and it’s opening the door to everything we want to build next.”

Powerful is good. Explainable matters, too.

Gary’s operations background brings another perspective to product development: someone has to use this solution, manage it, and explain how it works.

In mortgage lending, that last part matters quite a bit.

One of his favorite questions to ask early in development is:

“How will the local admin explain this to an auditor, and will that auditor be confident the risks were properly evaluated?”

It is a practical question that shapes better decisions. Efficiency matters. So do accountability, transparency, and giving lenders confidence in the technology they rely on. “It seemed like a good idea at the time” is rarely the documentation anyone is looking for.

That perspective also informs how Gary approaches AI. He uses it to help turn ideas into well-defined user stories and explore modern approaches to complex solutions. But his enthusiasm comes with clear expectations.

“The next big thing is exciting, but it has to be built on a foundation lenders can rely on.”

For Gary, responsible AI means reliable data, appropriate controls, and accountability for actions taken on a loan. The goal remains giving lenders more time for borrowers and the work that needs human judgment.

A decade of learning, with a memorable trip along the way

Working alongside LTK’s engineering team has given Gary a new appreciation for the discipline behind building software: plan, build, test, improve.

In return, he has brought a deep understanding of how lenders actually work and a habit of asking how each solution will hold up in the real world.

He has collected a few good memories along the way, too. As part of a fully remote team, Gary especially values the times everyone gets together in person.

One standout customer project involved helping Banco Popular bring its U.S. Virgin Islands branches onto Encompass, including an on-site visit to St. Thomas.

“Rewarding work, a great customer, and a beautiful setting. It’s hard to beat that combination!”

Some implementation projects do have better scenery.

A new title outside of work

Recently, Gary added another important role: grandfather.

Becoming a grandparent has been one of the greatest joys of his life. He and his family even moved to be closer to his grandson, making more room for the everyday moments that matter most.

One loyalty, however, remains geographically independent.

“No matter where I live, one thing will never change: I’ll always be a Boston sports fan!”

Still looking ahead

Ten years into his LTK career, Gary is excited about what comes next: more connected tools, responsible applications of AI, and a mortgage workflow that gives lenders greater capacity with less repetitive work.

“After ten great years, it feels like some of the most exciting work is still ahead, and I can’t wait to build it with this team.”

Gary, thank you for a decade of expertise, curiosity, and care for the people behind every loan. You have helped LTK grow while keeping us grounded in the needs of the lenders we serve.

Happy 10 years, Gary. We’re glad you’re building what’s next with us.
